#1 - Angra dos Reis, Brazil
Brazil’s visa waiver during the Olympics was a success for one big reason: it encouraged travel beyond the big cities. The tourism board hopes to bring back the waiver, and if you’re planning to take advantage, save time to visit Angra dos Reis, between Rio and São Paulo. This popular Brazilian vacation area is where cariocas go to escape the crowds. “It’s where many of the country’s elite have their beach villas,” says Martin Frankenberg of Matuete, who has access to several of these glamorous rentals. Big changes are coming to the region. In May, Brazilian chain Fasano will open a long-awaited 54-suite hotel in a complex that includes a marina, golf course, restaurants, and a spa. The design is striking, with elevated wooden buildings that look like they’re floating, all with open-air terraces and views of the forest and sea. And the government recently pledged $8 million to improve the infrastructure on Ilha Grande—an island that’s so popular that they’ve had to impose a daily limit on visitors.

Alaska Airlines is rolling out a new feature that fliers are sure to appreciate — larger overhead storage bins. The “Space Bins” debut today as Alaska receives its first new Boeing 737-900 aircraft. The bins will be seen first on the new aircraft and will be installed on other aircraft over time. The bins promise 50 percent more space than is available on Alaska’s existing 737s — increasing capacity from 117 to 174 bags on a jet with 181 seats. “Virtually everyone can carry on a bag, which is fantastic,” Alaska Airlines marketing vice president Sangita Woerner told USA Today’s Ben Mutzabaugh. Space Bins on an Alaska Airlines 737-900ER will hold as many as 174 standard carry-on bags, a 48 percent increase compared to current bins that hold up to 117 bags. Space Bins are deep enough to store nonstandard items, such as a guitar. Space Bins will arrive on all Next-Generation 737 and 737 MAX airplanes delivered to Alaska Airlines starting in late 2015. When open, the bin’s bottom edge hangs about 2 inches lower, which means people don’t have to lift their bags as high to load them. The deeper bins allow more bags to be stowed, and let customers load bags with less struggle and puts the flight attendant and overhead light buttons in easy reach. That should cut boarding times, improve on-time performance and require less intervention from flight attendants. According to Alaska Airlines, about half of its fleet of aircraft will be upgraded to the new bins by the end of 2017.
